Introducing the Australian Cyclones: Australia's National Wheelchair Handball Team

Wheelchair Handball Australia has today revealed the identity that will carry the nation's first-ever wheelchair handball team to the IHF World Championship: the Australian Cyclones.

The name marks a defining moment for the sport in Australia, landing just weeks before the squad makes history as the first Oceanian nation ever to compete at the IHF Wheelchair Handball World Championship, held in Granollers, Spain, from 16–20 September 2026. Australia will debut alongside fellow first-timers Libya and Lithuania, as the tournament expands to 12 nations across all six continents for the first time.

More Than a Nickname

A cyclone is one of the most powerful forces in the natural world — one that cannot be stopped, cannot be ignored, and builds momentum with every movement. For Wheelchair Handball Australia, it's the perfect metaphor for a team, and a sport, on the rise.

"We're not defined by the chairs we use," the team says. "We're defined by our speed, teamwork, resilience and relentless pressure."

It's a name that also mirrors the way the game is played. Wheelchair handball is fast and continuous: players rotate constantly, defence flips into attack in seconds, and pressure comes from every direction at once. Cyclones was chosen deliberately as an identity that includes everyone. It says nothing about disability, impairment or limitation — no reference to wheelchairs at all — meaning every athlete, official, volunteer and supporter can stand behind it equally. It's gender-neutral too, built to represent the men's, women's, mixed and future junior programs under one banner:
